GIS & Data Management Training
Compass Informatics provide a range of custom training courses in GIS and data management skills. These courses are run from our Dublin offices, or can by agreement by run on-site with client organisations.
We typically restrict classes to six persons for each GIS course. VAT is not applicable to training. Training is undertaken in the Compass training room and includes training notes/manual. A light lunch is provided.

Two day introductory course focusing on applications of GIS in the agred application area (e.g. land & asset management, environmental management, natural resources, planning) and includes use of key national datasets and problem solving exercises. At the end of this course users will be able to for example query and symbolise data, join map data to other tabular data, spatial analyse including buffering, output production quality maps.
Intermediate ArcGIS
2 day introductory course focusing on applications of GIS in environmental management and natural resources and includes use of key national datasets and problem solving exercises. It includes elements of the introductory course, covered at a more advanced level, coupled with data management and model building. Assumes prior completion of the introductory course or a solid background in GIS usage in ArcGIS or a similar GIS. Maximum 6 persons allowed on the course.
GPS data capture & integration with GIS
A one day course that presents the use of GPS-enabled mobile mapping systems for field data capture. The course covers principles of GPS/GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems); an overview of available GPS units; and practical training in data capture forms creation and field use. The day finishes with integration of field captured data into a GIS system. The GPS units used are the Magellan Mobile Mapper 100 and the Handheld Algiz 7 unit. This course is aimed at field staff who are looking to move from a paper based data capture method to a form driven GPS method and GIS technicians looking to integrate GPS data capture into their workflow.
Spatial Web Services- An Introduction
A one day course that will de-mystify the many acronyms like WMS, WFS, WCS, REST, CSW, OGC to name put a few! The course will explain the origins, types and benefits of web services, there is a hands-on element to the course as participants will create their own web services. The INSPIRE directive will be a constant theme during the course focusing on how to use web services to become INSPIRE compliant and will be given best practise guidelines. This course is aimed at those looking to gain a better understanding of web services and are looking to implement a web services solution in their organisation.
Network Analyst
Network Analyst helps you dynamically model realistic network conditions examples during the course will use road and river networks to solve vehicle routing problems that include turn restrictions, speed limits, height restrictions, traffic conditions at different times of the day and finding suitable habitat upstream for fish including barriers to moving upstream. With ArcGIS Network Analyst, you can conduct; drive-time analysis, point-to-point routing, fleet routing, route directions, service area definition, shortest path analysis, optimum route analysis, closest facility analysis, origin-destination analysis. As well as looking at the standard tools within the Network Analyst toolkit custom tools developed by Compass will be used for very specific tasks. This course is aimed at those already comfortable with ArcGIS and are looking to develop advanced analytical skills.
