Compass Network Services Training Workshop

INSPIRE Network Services are services required by the INSPIRE Directive (discovery services, view services, download services, transformation services) conforming to the INSPIRE network services implementing rules.  The Compass Network Service Workshop is aimed at understanding the functional requirements of each service, the standards applicable (OCG, ISO, INSPIRE) and, where possible, provide practical live demonstrations of these services using a combination of Open Source and Proprietary software.

1)   INSPIRE discovery services (CSW) make it possible to search for spatial data sets and services on the basis of the content of the corresponding metadata and to display the content of the metadata.

The Compass workshop guide through, step by step, the INSPIRE definitions for mandatory metadata elements, creation of xml metadata records, migration to a catalog such as GeoNetwork and demonstrate how this metadata is published to the ISDE portal.

2)   INSPIRE view services (WMS) make it possible to display, navigate, zoom in/out, pan, or overlay viewable spatial data sets and to display legend information and any relevant content of metadata.

The Compass workshop will examine the use of key value pairs for calling view services and provide live demonstrations on how to utilise Open Source applications for the provision of view services based on GeoServer & Open Layers API.

3)   INSPIRE download services (WFS) enable copies of spatial data sets, or parts of such sets, to be downloaded and, where practicable, accessed directly.

The Compass workshop will explore both Open Source & Proprietary options for schema mapping and data download and give an overview of Annex I & Annex II data specifications.

4)   INSPIRE transformation services enable spatial data sets to be transformed with a view to achieving Interoperability.

The workshop will discuss the implications for Interoperability and provide pan European examples of successful interoperability in the context of international, National and organisational SDI’s.

Wherever possible, discussions will be based on case studies which aim to provide a working context for Network Services.
